What's new with
ILDA and the website This page has news from 2008. For older news, click to get news from 2007 and 2006. In addition to the news items listed below, you may also want to check out the following webpages for news from ILDA Members:
September 2008 Welcome to a new ILDA Corporate Member: Top Laser Show of Belo Horizonte in Brazil. The company is run by Renato de Oliveira, who also is attending the 2008 ILDA Conference on board the Carnival Imagination. Renato hopes to hold a meeting in Brazil to discuss audience scanning safety and controls.
We have issued information about weather and the ILDA cruise, scheduled for Sept. 8-13. Details are in the statement at the top of the cruise overview page.
August 2008 Welcome to a new ILDA Nonprofit Member: Sean Kearney of Laser Guy Productions. Sean gives presentations to elementary schools on lasers and optics. These include shows played from ADATs on an RGB projector. Welcome to a new ILDA Corporate Member: Sjappa ans of Brekstad, Norway. Added minutes of the SAE G10-T Laser Hazards Safety Subcommittee meeting, held Aug. 11-15 2008. The document, which is for ILDA Members use only, describes about 12 incidents where lasers were used to illuminate aircraft. Although these involved laser pointers, it still is useful for ILDA Members to read about this. No one should point a laser at or near an aircraft, and increasingly there are arrests, trials and even jail terms if this happens. ILDA attended the summer meeting of the SAE G10-T Laser Hazards Safety Subcommittee, the group that helps develop guidance and regulations for FAA and other national aviation authorities. At the three-day meeting, we gave a presentation on the Moscow incident and helped the group write proposed regulations governing outdoor laser use. ILDA also attended the South East Laser Enthusasts Meeting, in Newton NC. This is a group of laser enthusiasts who normally meet online. We gave two presentations; on the Moscow incident and on ILDA in general. Added a discussion of ILDA as being a trade association, and that it is not a professional association. The page gives information about ILDA's power and limits with regard to "certifying" Members or promising any level of professionalism from Members. The page also talks about upcoming efforts in the area of accrediting companies and individuals, and certifying equipment. Added hotel information for those who are attending the ILDA Conference (Sept. 8-13 on the Carnival Imagination, sailing from Miami). We are trying to get all the information you need online here at the ILDA website, with links to any necessary Carnival pages as well. Released a draft version of a proposed Laser Show Safety Basics document. This gives a quick overview of the most important safety concepts for laser displays. ILDA Members are welcome to comment on this document and suggest any changes. After the document is finalized, ILDA Members will be required to sign that they have read, understood and acknowledge the information in the document. Welcome to a new ILDA Corporate Member: Prolight of Zagreb, Croatia. The company director is Hrvoje Simic. They do production as well as selling laser systems. More information is at their website; information about their laser systems is here. Welcome to two new ILDA Corporate Members: Karl Rothweiler of Laser Wizardry in Phoenix, Arizona and Scott Wagmeister of Aventura, Florida. Long-time ILDA Members and attendees of the "Laser F/X" conferences in the mid-1990s may remember Karl for his enthusiastic participation. Welcome to both new members! Added a Dutch version of the July 21 ILDA press release about the Aquamarine laser show incident in Russia. Thanks go to Peter Broerse of DMXLASER for providing the translation. Added a list of donors who gave significant contributions for ILDA's research and public awareness activities, on the Aquamarine laser show incident in Russia. This list can be found at the top of each webpage about the incident. Our deepest thanks go to the following donors: William R. Benner, Jr, Pangolin Laser Systems ¤ Hugo Bunk, Laserimage b.v. ¤ Joseph Suehle, Image Engineering ¤ Alberto Kellner, Laser Entertainment s.r.l. ¤ George Dodworth, Lightwave Int'l. ¤ Alexander Timofeyev, Orion-Art Production ¤ Greg Makhov, LSDI Inc. ¤ Michael Sollinger, LaserAnimation Sollinger ¤ Paul Berthot, Clandestine Systems ¤ Edwin Dolby, Laser Productions ¤ Dave Nash, FFP Laser Systems July 2008 Added an Italian translation of ILDA's statement and FAQ on the Aquamarine festival laser show near Moscow. Thanks to Alberto Kellner of Laser Entertainment s.r.l. in Milan for providing the translation of the original English statement/FAQ. On July 22, ILDA issued a press release with its findings and reactions to the July 5 incident at the Aquamarine Open Air Festival. The release is in addition to the statement and FAQ issued July 16.
Welcome to six new ILDA Members. These companies and individuals have joined ILDA at this time, in part to help support our efforts to provide accurate facts on the Aquamarine laser incident near Moscow. We thank them very much for their support! Please click the links for more information on these new Members:
On July 17, the ILDA Board of Directors voted on two measures to help reassure the public about safe laser shows. First, ILDA Members will be required to review some basic information and reaffirm their commitment to safety. Second, ILDA is working to get our message to the public, that the Aquamarine show was irresponsible and not in line with the 40-year record of safe laser usage. This effort is being funded by special donations from Members. Moved ILDA's Safety links and articles webpage from the Members-Only area to a public area. This was done to help disseminate basic laser safety information not only to our Members but also to non-member laserists and the general public.
On July 14, press reports
appeared about a laser show near Moscow where dozens of
ravers suffered eye injuries. ILDA Members soon deduced that this was
caused by the irresponsible and improper use of pulsed lasers aimed into
the audience. The type of laser used should NEVER be applied to audience
scanning. Welcome to a new ILDA Corporate level 3 member, SwissLas Braun & Gueller. As the name indicates, the company is in Switzerland and is run by Beat Gueller and Remo Braun. They sell laser modules and projectors made by them (not imported), and they are Swiss dealers for Pangolin. Their website is in German; check out the laser-bouncemirror menu at the left side!

Details are on the Members-Only page which lists the 2008 Board meeting minutes. Did additional work on the "ILDA Website At-A-Glance" menu. Also, updated the Javascript fly-out menu which appears at the left side of most pages, so it matched the new organization of the "At-A-Glance" menu. Updated information about how to make reservations for the 2008 ILDA Conference. The updates give additional information and links to ILDA Members who might want to host a conference. The main updated page is here; a few related pages were also revised. Added an "ILDA Website At-A-Glance" menu at the bottom of most pages here at the website. This was suggested by Ante Uglesic, who wanted the ability to quickly skim through a list of all the pages, to see what information is available. The "At-A'Glance" menu currently does not have pages from The Laserist section of the website; this will be added later. Also, the SIB show report will be added soon. Welcome to a new nonprofit ILDA Member, the Grand Haven (Michigan) Rotary Musical Lights Project. Run by project engineer/coordinator Brad Boyink, the event is on a large scale. From their website: "The display contains over 138,000 lights, 90% of which are energy efficient LEDs. The display power consumption is less than 500 watts / 90 amps when everything is lit. It takes an average of 10-15 hours to program a single song because there are 20 lighting control computers networked together to operate the show, which is completely automated. It took 42,000 feet of wire and over 10,000 zip ties to hook up the 328 independent zones over a 2.5 month time span." There is also a video of the show at their website.
March 2008 ILDA issues statement regarding IEC 60825-3, "Safety of laser products - Part 3: Guidance for laser displays and shows". A newly-revised version of 60825-3 was released on March 11.
